Creation of Filipino Heritage Month in Toronto makes Canadian history

June is now Filipino Heritage Month in Toronto, and people can celebrate that in Scarborough later this month.

The Filipino community, with over 160,000 members, is one of Toronto’s fastest-growing communities.

Yet until Toronto City Council passed a motion by Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Neethan Shan on Nov. 8, no government in Canada created a heritage month for Filipinos.

Minority communities often “feel their contributions aren’t part of the mainstream narrative,” said Shan, who wants the province and federal governments to follow suit.

Shan hopes a celebration event, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Scarborough Civic Centre, will start discussions on the community’s issues and needs.

The month also gives Torontonians a chance “to reflect on the many outstanding contributions Filipino Canadians have made in Canada,” he said.
