Scarborough Lady Blues win U.S. national tournament

A Grade 8 Scarborough girls basketball team with plenty of hardware already from Ontario provincial championships has also added an American national title to their growing collection.

The Scarborough Lady Blues won the Youth Basketball of America’s national championship, which wrapped up July 5 in Orlando.

The team won the July 5 championship game 49-27 over the Marietta Starz from Georgia.

It capped off a perfect six-win tournament for the Blues including a 46-35 semifinal win over Baton Rouge Tigers, on top of four preliminary round wins.

The team’s point guard, Keishana Washington from Pickering, was selected as tourney MVP.

The high flyiing Scarborough team earned the silver medal at the Ontario Basketall Association provincial championships this past spring.

It marked their fourth straight medal, winning bronze the previous year on the heels of two gold medals – all in the top division.

Coached by Brian Breedy, other team members include Brianna Breedy, Sabree Thomas, Kylee O’Hara, Julia Kelly, Wallace Spartaro, Laiya Johnston and Tamoiya Eldemire.
