Food For Fines is annual chance to escape librarians' wrath at U of T

University of Toronto librarians are a forgiving bunch, at least sometimes.

Food For Fines, which gives “library scofflaws” a chance to escape penalties for handing in overdue material, returns next week.

At participating U of T libraries, including at the Scarborough campus, it’s a chance to help fellow students too.

From Monday, Nov. 20 to Friday, Nov. 24, libraries will forgive $2 in fines for each nonperishable item of food donated, up to $20 a person.

Donations will go to the U of T Food and Clothing Bank, except at UTSC, where a new independent food bank for students started this fall.

Last year, U of T libraries forgave almost $2,600 in late fees during Food For Fines.
