Many families grumble about the Canadian winter. Having to shovel your driveway, wear extra warm layers, and deal with shorter daylight hours can take their toll, but short of moving south, this is all part of being Canadian and it’s important to make the best of it. If you’re looking for fun things to do with your kids this winter, get inspired with this list of entertaining things to do both in and out of doors.
1. Participate in Winter Recreation
Taking part in fun winter sports is a great way to enjoy the winter months. Whether you hit the slopes or lace up your skates this season, these are great activities to encourage your family to get some fresh air, exercise, and have fun doing it!
2. Attend a Sporting Event
Hockey is Canadian’s national pastime. We love to play and watch! What better way to enjoy a cold winter evening than taking in a game. Basketball is also played during the winter months, so enjoy all the action courtside!
3. Family Games Night
Pick a night each week this winter and spend the evening as a family playing a board game. Make popcorn and other treats and enjoy some quality time together at home.
4. Read Together
Much like a family games night, have a family reading night. Turn off the television, put away cellphones, computers, tablets, and gaming systems, and gather together to enjoy a story. Whether you read out loud to everyone, or if everyone chooses their own book to read quietly, teaching your children to enjoy reading at a young age will create lifelong learners. In the summer months you can take your family reading club outside.
5. Have Fun in the Kitchen
Winter is the perfect time to involve your kids in the kitchen. Get the whole family into a cooking or baking project, then sit down together to enjoy the fruits of your labour. From daily meals to special treats, your kids will have fun and learn important life skills.
6. Build a Snowman or Fort
Embrace your inner child by helping your kids build a snowman and/or snow fort this winter. Whether you play in your own backyard or in a nearby park, learn to love the snow by experiencing it again through a child’s eyes. Afterwards go home or out to a local café for some hot chocolate.
7. Visit an Indoor Playground/Recreation Centre/Park
Kids need to run around and shout and burn off excess energy. To prevent them to doing so in your home, take the whole family to a fun indoor play area during the winter when it’s not always possible to play outside.
No matter how you spend the season, it’s important to spend time with loved ones! Whether you’re outside getting fresh air and exercise, or cozy indoors enjoying some quiet activities at home, there are plenty of ways to have fun this winter.
