Are pies the new cupcake?

Homemade pie from Forsythe Family Farms in Markham.

Inside Toronto has teamed up with OurFaves.com to bring you the very best in Toronto culture, according to passionate locals like you.

In November, The New York Times boldly proclaimed that America's love affair with the cupcake is over. From Brooklyn to San Francisco, bakeries and restaurants alike are putting the old-fashioned dessert back on their menu boards. In Manhattan's East Village, the famous Momofuku Milk Bar (David Chang will be opening a Momofuku beside the Shangri-La Toronto condo in 2012) is offering up an indulgent apple pie layer cake consisting of apple pie filling between the cake layers and pie crust crumbs in the frosting. And just last month, the doyenne of domesticity, Martha Stewart, opened up a pop-up pie shop in NYC to celebrate the release of her new pie cookbook.

South of the border, it seems like pies may be displacing the cupcake trend. It may be a while before the pie movement hits Canada, but here are a few of our favourite places to dig into scrumptious pie.

1. Wanda's Pie In The Sky

Where: 287 Augusta Ave. in Kensington Market

We love it because..."You name a pie flavour, they've got it. From good 'ol apple pie to apple crumble, dutch apple, fancy dutch, peach apple, Ontario sour cherry, peach praline, sour cream rhubarb, banana cream, coconut cream, mocha almond fudge, apricot frangipane, marzipan raspberry and spiced walnut - the list goes on and on..." Hungry for more?

2. Scaramouche Restaurant

Where: 1 Benvenuto Pl. in Midtown

We love it because it's got the..."Most satisfying coconut cream pie in the city." Hungry for more?

3. Sweet Tooth Pasty Shop

Where: 508 Danforth Ave. in Greektown

We love it because..."There's a lot of mediocre pumpkin pie out there, and flacid crust plus tasteless squash mush just won't do for Thanksgiving. For a gem of a homemade store-bought treat, head to Sweet Tooth, where judiciously spiced pumpkin custard inside a perfect pastry shell can be yours. Anytime. Just add whipped cream..." 4. Madeleines, Cherry Pie and Ice Cream

Where: 1087 Bathurst St. in The Annex

We love it because..."They certainly know how to make them well, and with seasonal pies ranging from rhubarb custard in the spring and limoncello meringue in the winter there's always an interesting new combination to try out. They also provide some delicious pastries (including their namesake) and a Sunday brunch in a beautiful back patio in the summer." Hungry for more?

5. Forsythe Family Farms

Where: 10539 Kennedy Rd. in Markham

We love it because..."If you've ever tried the farm's blueberry pie, apple crumble, pumpkin, and butter tarts not many other - even other farm fresh pies - have anything on Forsythe's." Hungry for more?
