SUB-URBAN ARTS FEB. 16 to 23

This week there's an opportunity to delve into the world of Baroque music with a free talk at a local library by a Tafelmusik violinist. And keeping in tune with the music theme the annual Winterfolk Blues and Roots Festival is on this weekend.

Antonitas D'Havila with Saul Torres

Saúl Torres, lead singer of popular Toronto Latin band Dirty Maria, joins Flamenco great Antonitas D'Havila at Trinity St. Paul concert Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Seamlessly ties together latin, funk, rock, and flamenco, Saul Torres will thrill audiences with his great passion and artistry as he joins legendary Gypsy Flamenco guitarist Antonitas D'Havila, in a one night only concert. Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Talk

Learn more about baroque music with Tafelmusik violinist Patricia Ahern at North York Central Library Feb. 16 from 7 to 8 p.m. Ahern will introduce you to Tafelmusik and to period performance, including a comparison between the baroque violin that Tafelmusik musicians use, and the modern violin used by a symphony orchestra. She will also chat about the fiery Italian composer Vivaldi, and the music Tafelmusik will play at the George Weston Recital Hall on Feb. 21. Winterfolk Blues&Roots Festival X

The Association of Artists for a Better World presents Winterfolk Blues and Roots Festival Feb. 17 to 19. In the Heights

There are only a few more performances of Dancap Productions Inc. In the Heights, which is now playing until Feb. 19 on the Main Stage Theatre. In The Heights is a sensational new show about chasing your dreams and finding your true home. It's an exhilarating journey into a vibrant Manhattan community - a place where the coffee is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. Harbourfront Centre

Harbourfront Centre's free family festival celebrates skating and the culture that surrounds it, takes place Feb. 19 and Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a wide variety of activities perfect for both kids and parents. Paperfolds

A Solo Art Show by Julian Mulock at Todmorden Mills Heritage Site is now on display until Feb. 29. This show is a series of paintings based on a simple theme. It all started with a small painting that gathered together a few elements that were vaguely related. The intent was to create a pleasing composition and a kind of trompe l'oeil. The focus eventually shifted to the folded paper backgrounds, which are the theme of Paperfolds. Virtuoso Vivaldi

Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra presents Virtuoso Vivaldi Feb. 21 at George Weston Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Featuring Marion Verbruggen - the high-spirited Dutch recorder virtuoso beloved by audiences around the world. Music includes the lively recorder concerto La Tempesta di Mare, a virtuosic concerto for sopranino recorder, the popular Concerto for Mandolin in C Major, and the enchanting Concerto for Lute and Viola d'Amore in D Minor. Alissa York - My Life as a Writer

Wally Schmidt

As part of its ongoing series of Contemporary Arts Exhibits, Cedar Ridge Gallery features the photography of artist Wally Schmidt Feb. 12 to 24. A passionate fly fishing guide and instructor, Wally has fished countless streams, rivers and oceans on three continents. While on these trips, he savoured the scenery and the wilderness, from the rugged terrain of Patagonia to the pastoral countryside of New Zealand. An avid photographer since his teens, Wally's love for the medium is apparent in his work. On show are striking black and white photos of the American West.
