This music festival makes having a case of the winter blues a good thing.
University of Toronto Scarborough is once again hosting it's annual Winter Blues Festival to showcase the work of the university's visual and performing arts students and offer the community a taste of the creativity taking place at the school.
Andrew Hercules, spokesperson for the event, says, "For the third year, the Winter Blues Festival showcases the diversity of arts and culture here at UTSC."
The weeklong event, which runs from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3, will start off with a bang with two of the most anticipated events of the festival. One is a production by the UTSC Drama Society of Closer.
Also, a highlight of the festival is a free world rhythms concert by the Canadian world music ensemble Autorickshaw, which is on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Leigha Lee Browne Theatre.
Seating is limited, call ahead to reserve seats.
On Monday, the inaugural UTSC piano and guitar competition will take place aimed at showcasing the musical skills of UTSC students. The winners' showcase takes place the following day.
The music is a combination of classical, acoustic guitar and blues, said Hercules.
The week continues with many student showcases, open house rehearsals and a past favourite: Poetry Idol. There will also be performances by the UTSC Concert Choir, the Jazz Orchestra, and Vocomotive, UTSC's a cappella ensemble.
Events are held across the campus and all events are open to students, staff, faculty, and the general public.
