AT ISSUE: A massive redevelopment project is in the works for the North York neighbourhood – one of 13 ‘priority neighbourhoods’ within the City of Toronto. The plan calls for replacing all the city-owned housing units that make up the neighbourhood with a mix of market-value and city-owned housing. While approved in principle by council earlier this year, the 20-year plan proved to be contentious, particularly in the ward race in the most recent municipal election. Higher population densities and additional traffic are chief among neighbourhood concerns. Those that find the redevelopment a welcome event do so because they feel the community is isolated. As one resident stated: “It’s not only about building new homes, but feeling socially new.”
