The Scarborough Stingrays midget girls 18U tier 1 team are off to the Canadian National Fastpitch Championships from Aug. 1 to 8 in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The team won the Ontario championship held in Guelph July 16 to 18 with a record of 7 and 1.

"The girls played hard," said team manager Steve Renaud.

Scarborough took the chamionship game with a 4-3 win seven innings over the Brantford Bobcats.

Renaud said the girls have been training three times a week.

"They are dedicated," he said, adding that's tough with a group of teens who are balancing jobs, school and social lives.

At the national championships, the Stingrays will play against teams from Manitoba, Quebec and the favoured British Columbia team.

"Our first game is against B.C.," he said. "They're highly rated,"

Renaud said he's hoping the Stingrays experience will give them the edge.

"We've played more than 100 games just this season," he said.

The team's head coach is Pat Acton.

The team holds various fundraisers and is looking for sponsors. Call 416-450-4349 if interested.
