Scarborough youth helps Canada to historic bronze at U-17 basketball tourney

A Scarborough youth has already had a memorable summer helping Canada to a historic bronze medal at the first U-17 world basketball championship that wrapped up in Germany on Sunday, July 11.

Negus Webster-Chan rose through the Scarborough Blues basketball program and last year starred for the Pope John Paul II senior basketball team, although only in Grade 10.

He was also an integral part of the surprising Canadian success story in Germany, which culminated in an 83-81 win over Lithuania in the bronze medal game. Webster-Chan contributed 13 points.

His highest offensive output in the tournament, with 16 points, was in a 102-96 quarterfinal win over China.

The Basketball Canada website notes he will head south in September to Huntington Prep in West Virginia.

The national squad was headed by Ryerson Rams (and former Eastern Commerce) coach Roy Rana.
