Showing the strength of basketball both in Toronto and in the tough south division, in particular, Jarvis Collegiate won a bronze medal at the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) 3A boys hoops championships in Kingston last week.
The Bulldogs, seeded fourth, cruised to a 55-45 win over fifth-seeded Orchard Park of Stoney Creek in the bronze medal game.Jarvis had three players in double digits (Mussa Noble Mohamed 12, Aaron Shadrach 10, Jamal Gatali 10), with the rest of the scoring taken care of by Omer Ibrahim 8, Vinothan Suntharalingam 6, Satish Muneeswaran 4, Daniel Zerihun 4 and Jamaal Thomas 1.Jarvis settled for the bronze medal match after losing their semifinal match 62-52 to fellow Toronto District School Board (TDSB) high school Martingrove Collegiate of Etobicoke, seeded third. It was a rematch of last month's TDSB 3A championship which Martingrove won 63-61.Martingrove went on to win the 3A OFSAA gold medal 56-54 over top seeded Loyola of Oakville.Jarvis plays in the tough south division, which just happens to boast back-to-back winners in the top OFSAA 4A division - Oakwood Collegiate won this year and Eastern Commerce won last year.(OFSAA levels, from one to four, are geared to school size with the caveat that schools can compete above their school size, but not below). In fact, Jarvis' only losses in the regular (7-2) and post season were against Oakwood, Eastern Commerce (and Martingrove in the above-mentioned 3A city final). At OFSAA, Jarvis had a slow start, dropping their opening game 39-36 to Frontenac.Fortunately, the tourney format allowed for a first-game loss, and Jarvis got back into the competition with wins over seventh-seeded North Park 42-28 and second-seeded Anderson 62-55.Here's the Jarvis Bulldogs bronze-medal winning roster: Aaron Shadrach, Mussa Noble Mohamed, Jamal Gatali, Jamaal Thomas, Omer Ibrahim, Sami Osman, Vinothan Suntharalingam, Satish Muneeswaran, Tony Nguyen, Yohan Kessete, Samer Muselem, Zaki Farah and Daniel Zerihun.Complete tourney summary at http://www.ofsaa.on.ca/boysaaabasketballSKIINGCity centre high schools are traditionally strong in alpine skiing and this year was no exception.Lawrence Park Collegiate's Rachel Rennick led the way at last month's OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) alpine skiing championships, sweeping both of her level two girls events with gold in both slalom and giant slalom. The only other city centre medalist was Zoe Redden of Lawrence Park with a silver in level one girls slalom.Competitors compete in two events (slalom and giant slalom) and are divided into male and female at two different levels (basically school-trained level one, and the more elite club trained level two).Teamwise, Toronto earned three medals, two of them to Lawrence Park CI - second in level one girls combined and third in level two girls combined. (Etobicoke's Richview CI won the boys level one combined event.)For a complete list of all Toronto top-10 finishers, log onto our website at http://www.insidetoronto.com/sports/article/625535--toronto-skiers-make-podium-at-ofsaaOr go right to the source at http://www.ofsaa.on.ca/alpine/
