Double gold for York Mills swimmer
Malvern CI fourth overall at OFSAA
A double gold medal performance by Nicholas Poon of York Mills Collegiate led a strong Toronto contingent at the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) swimming championships held right here in Toronto at the Etobicoke Olympium earlier this month.
OFSAA allows for competition in the 'open' category, which includes elite club trained swimmers, and also for high school trained swimmers in senior and junior categories.Toronto's only individual double gold medal haul, Poon won gold in both the senior men's 100m breaststroke and 100m individual medley.Toronto did, however, feature several double medalists:* Paulina Bond of Malvern Collegiate earned gold and silver, respectively, in open women's 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle;* Max Carnella of Upper Canada College scored gold and silver, respectively, in junior men's 100m individual medley and 50m backstroke;* Jennifer Tapley of Michael Power/St. Joseph scored gold and bronze, respectively, in open women's 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle. Also earning gold medals were:* Edward Liu of Harbord Collegiate in open men's 100m butterfly. He also placed fifth in 50m freestyle.* Max Materne of Northern Secondary School won gold in senior men's 100m backstroke. Here are the rest of Toronto's individual OFSAA medal winners:INDIVIDUAL SILVER* Victoria Chan of Havergal College, silver in open women's 50m freestyle;* Alejandro Soares of Forest Hill CI, silver in junior men's 50m butterfly.
