Giant-killing Oakwood CI in OFSAA hoops final

Defeated top three seeds en route to gold medal game

York's Oakwood Collegiate Institute has knocked off the three top seeds to earn a place in the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) 4A boys hoops championship game Wednesday, 8 p.m. at Durham College in Oshawa.

And now to secure the gold medal, they'll have to stave off an upset, themselves.

Seeded sixth, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) high school will take on 12th-seeded St. Thomas More from Hamilton who are trying to manufacture an even bigger Cinderella story.

After a relatively easy first round win 79-48 over 16th-seeded St. Matthew (Orleans), Oakwood rang off an almost unprecedented giant killing spree, defeating top-seeded Pickering High School (Ajax) 52-44, third-seeded Richardson (Ajax) 75-72 and, finally, second-seeded Mother Teresa (Scarborough) 65-60 in the Wednesday morning semifinal.

St. Thomas More, on the other hand, had a much easier time of it - and deservedly so. That's what happens when you knock off the tournament's number one seed in the first game, which they did 55-53 over Pickering High School.

That gave them the easy route to the final and they capitalized 46-36 over 18th-seeded Nantyr Shores (Innisfil), 56-52 over 14th-seeded Notre Dame (Welland) and, finally, 56-40 over fifth-seeded Vaughan SS in their Wednesday semifinal.
