North York Storm atom girls win gold at tourney

The North York Storm atom girls won gold at the 16th annual Durham West Lightning hockey tournament held in Pickering last month.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the third period, North York managed to make a comeback with a final score of 2-1 against the Oakville Hornets in the championship game.

North York player Lochlahn March tied the game early in the final frame. Rachael Walker then scored with only 4:24 left.

In a previous game in the tournament North York won 3-0 over the Durham West Lightning. Julia Williams, Alyssa Colavecchia and Ashley Almeida scored, while Jennifer Hearn posted the shutout.

North York also won 5-1 over the Hamilton Hawks with a hat-trick by Colavecchia, while Walker and Williams scored a goal each.

In the semifinal game, North York faced the Hamilton Hawks again. North York won with a 9-1 victory securing a spot in the championship game. Goal scorers included Colavecchia with four, Almeida with two and Walker, Williams and Holmes with one each.
