The first-ever national curling championship breaks ice this week at St. George's Golf and Country Club.
Men's and women's curling teams that won their respective local club championships compete in the annual event, funded by The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company."The Dominion believes amateur sport is an exciting and vital part of Canadian life," George Cooke, president and CEO of The Dominion said in a statement. "We are excited to take our support of curling to the next level with The Dominion Curling Club Championship."World champion curler and Olympic hopeful Glenn Howard gives the keynote address at Tuesday night's opening banquet, featuring other notables, including 1998 Olympic silver medalist Mike Harris, Etobicoke Centre MPP Donna Cansfield and Bill Adair of the Canadian Paraplegic Association (Ontario).Teams from all 10 provinces and three territories will compete, as will a separate entry from northern Ontario.Tournament play begins Wednesday morning.Toronto Mayor David Miller and celebrity curler Sherry Middaugh congratulate Canada's first-ever male and female club champions Sunday, Nov. 29 during the event's closing banquet.All championship profits will be given to the Canadian Paraplegic Association and developmental curling initiatives in communities across the country.
