Seneca wins gold in national soccer competition in double overtime

It took the Seneca College Sting two overtime periods, but they won gold at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Esther Shiner Stadium 3-2 over FX Garneau Elans.

Mahmoud Mirsedeghi scored his second goal of the game in the second overtime period to win the game for the Sting. The match started with Claudio Posca who headed home the first goal of the game for the Sting off a free kick near midfield.

FX Garneau scored with headers from Guillaume Nadeau and Patrice Dion to take a 2-1 lead into the half. In the second frame, Mirsedeghi broke loose down the left wing and knocked a low bouncer past the goalkeeper Francois Hufty to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams had good scoring chances in regulation time and the first overtime period. Mirsedeghi scored the winning goal two minutes into the second overtime period.

The Sting went 3-0 in the tournament.

Les Elans went 2-1 in the tournament to earn the silver medal and the Douglas College Royals took home the bronze.
