Balmy Beach rugby club won’t defend title

Beach Mirror

It’s pretty hard to top a perfect season, so the Balmy Beach Rugby Club’s premier team found out Saturday, Oct. 13 as they bowed out of the McCormick Cup playdowns.

Playing at home at Tubs and Gee Gage field at Ashbridges Bay, Balmy Beach were upset 17-13 by London St. George in a semifinal game.

Balmy Beach had finished second in their top premier league with an 8-5-1 record while London St. George had finished in second place in their Tier 2 provincial league at 10-4.

Last season, the storied Balmy Beach club had won their regular season title and McCormick Cup championship with a perfect record.

“They (London) brought back to life a seemingly lost art, the cross kick, to (Connor) Traynor for two tries that held up for a 17-13 victory,” said a post on the Balmy Beach website. “Not quite sharp enough at the right times...back to the drawing board for next season.”

The rugby club isn’t quite finished for the season, however, as the men’s second team continued their winning ways 33-14 win over the Aurora Barbarians to put them in first place in their playoff round robin format at 2-0.
