Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. While this may be an old adage, that doesn’t make it any less true, particularly when it comes to home décor.
Giving the gift of home décor can be tricky. Not only is décor a very personal gift, it’s also one that’s intended to be put on display. That means the giver needs to be absolutely certain that the gift will work with the recipient’s existing home décor.
If you know a new homeowner, a young adult who has just moved into their first apartment, or anyone else whom you think may enjoy some home décor, here are some tips to help make the holiday gift giving, and receiving, a success.
Get to Know Their Home
The #1 rule of purchasing home décor as a gift is to get to know the recipient’s home. Go on a pre-holiday scouting mission with your camera at the ready. First, take note of the style of the home. Try to discern if they enjoy a specific look, such as minimalist, mid-century modern, or farmhouse.
Not everyone has a particular style, but if it’s clear that they do, try to stick with décor items that play within it. If you’re unsure, opt for neutral gifts that can blend in with most styles.
Always Get a Gift Receipt
With home décor being such a personal gift, including a gift receipt is an absolute must. This also means doing your best to stay away from items or shops that don’t have a return policy. This includes garage sales, estate sales and antique shops (unless, you happen upon a specific item that your recipient has been searching for).
As an aside, giving something vintage as a gift is also an extremely risky practice. In addition to the item not being returnable, you’ll find that many people who enjoy vintage pieces in their home, consider the hunt to be part of the fun. A great alternative to purchasing a vintage décor piece for someone, is to create a gift certificate treating them to an afternoon of treasure hunting.
Follow Them on Social Media
The best way to covertly figure out the types of décor someone likes is to follow them on social sites like Pinterest or Houzz. Check out their home décor boards and get a feel for their likes and dislikes. Chances are, you’ll even find links to specific things that you can purchase.
Give Gift Cards
The best way to give décor as a gift is to give a gift card to their favourite store, such as HomeSense, Ikea, Hudson’s Bay, or Canadian Tire. That way, they can choose something perfectly suited to their home and individual tastes.
