Black Creek Drive needs environmental improvements

To the editor:

At some time or another, most of us have driven on Black Creek Drive.

This road was built to take heavy city traffic going north because construction on the Spadina Expressway was stopped at the foot of Eglinton Avenue West near Marlee Avenue. Toronto's transportation department came out with a plan to build Black Creek Drive in York South-Weston, with little consultation with area residents, according to some people I have spoken to.

I take this road many different times during the week and find during rush hours it has heavy traffic.

The biggest problem is at the intersection of Black Creek and Lawrence - cars are backed up in all four directions, but primarily going north from Trethewey Avenue to Lawrence and southbound from Hwy. 400/Jane Street exit to Lawrence.

I understand, after talking with the Silverthorn Ratepayers Association, the original plan, presented to area residents, included an underpass at the intersection of Black Creek and Lawrence so traffic could move in both directions without stopping. But this didn't happen.

As area taxpayers we should demand this roadway be fixed so that rush-hour traffic doesn't congest our roadways and pollute our air.

We should ask our elected officials at all three levels of government to acquire some of the stimulus infrastructure money that's available, utilize it for York South-Weston and re-build this roadway at Black Creek and Lawrence.
