Pharmacy reforms not reason for drug shortages

To the editor:

Re: 'Anxious dialysis patients await return of drug supply,' Health, Aug. 13.

The Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association (CGPA) is aware of media reports regarding prescription drug shortages in Canada.

Reports of shortages of both brand-name and generic prescription drugs began in early 2010.

Disruptions in the supply chain for generic and brand-name prescription pharmaceutical products can occur and may be caused by a number of

issues, including:

* World-wide shortages of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) required to produce the products;

* Changes to regulatory standards and requirements;

* Production issues/problems for one or more manufacturers;

* Changes in production equipment/processes.

Given the products named and the fact shortages appear to be affecting the supply of both brand-name and generic prescription medicines, the cause of the recently reported shortages is not yet clear.

CGPA is continuing to monitor this issue and work with its member companies and regulators to determine the causes of the shortages and what steps can be taken to ensure adequate supplies for Canadian patients.

I can say with a great deal of confidence that any current shortages of generic drugs is not the result of recent reforms in Ontario and other provinces.
