Tree bylaw needs to be changed

Re: 'New trees would be better in the city,' Letters, Aug. 13.

To the editor:

I endorse the views of Louise Hart.

I am experiencing a similar situation and I am sure many homeowners in other old established neighbourhood are also feeling the crunch.

I have a tree that is too large for our backyard, causing damage to ours and our neighbour's drainage system, resulting in leakage in the basements.

I applied to the city for permission to remove the tree and requested them to inspect the status. But the city did not inspect and asked me to produce an arborist's report. I approached various arborists who demanded $300 to $400 for certification, but they do not guarantee the city will authorize removal.

The arborists charge about $2,000 for removal of the tree if the city authorizes it.

So I am in limbo.

These trees are too large for our backyards and should be replaced with new trees. It is time for the city to review the situation and amend the bylaw in specific cases to avoid any major mishaps.
