Dog owners an easy target

To the editor:

Re: 'Why do Torontonians need to put dogs before people?' Letter, March 5

Carey Morgan writes an eloquent letter about the disapproval of the establishment of leash free parks in his area. Although I agree with him that some irresponsible dog owners do not pick up after their pets (and why is it that these pets always appear to be the size of a small pony?), I feel the leash free parks have been a long time coming.

Pets provide companionship, security and a spur to get out and exercise for many people. Dog walkers are in parks every day of the year, whatever the weather, and are a healthy counterbalance to the more nefarious activities that go such as drug dealing, prostitution and vandalism. None of these activities seem to inspire as much outrage as dogs which makes me think we dog owners constitute an easy target.

Being let out in the backyard and walking on a leash does not provide sufficient exercise for a dog, especially a young animal. In my opinion the city has made an excellent decision in positioning the new leash free area in ColonelSam Smith Park between the road and the water treatment plant as I know for a fact that this area was rarely used by the public.

Parks should try and cater to everyone. I do not object to the new skating track being constructed in that park although I will not be using it. Surely it is not unreasonable to hope that some of my tax dollars will be spent making my life as a dog owner easier?
