Olympics are a waste of money

To the editor:

I admit it, right from the start, I haven't the slightest interest in the 2010 Winter Olympics. And I would venture to suggest those who do find them interesting are in the minority.

I recently found myself at a TTC bus shelter on the corner of Sheppard and Midland avenues on a Saturday at 6:50 a.m. with the temperature at -19 C. Fortunately there was little wind.

When eventually the bus arrived, I said to the driver, "Boy, am I glad to see you!" He laughed and replied, "I'll bet". The bus was packed, although I was able to find a seat by squeezing between two other riders.

As the bus proceeded westward, there was a steady flow of movement among the riders at various stops. Where were these people going at such an early, cold hour on a Saturday morning? How many, do you suppose, were interested in the Olympics? A few? Any?

In my opinion, these Games have been a complete waste of time and money, especially the latter. We should hold the Summer Olympics in Greece permanently and the Winter Olympics in Switzerland. The International Olympic Committee should be able to finance this easily.
