New sidewalks would be welcome addition

To the editor:

I am a homeowner whose property will be directly impacted by the proposed new sidewalks along Tamworth Road (two north blocks), Holcolm Road (between Tamworth and Edithvale Drive) and Claywood Road.

The city provides winter plowing, but even if it didn't, I would gladly clear the snow from the sidewalk for the benefits the sidewalk provides year round.

When I purchased my home five years ago, I chose this neighbourhood for its walkability. I use local recreation facilities, banks and grocery stores and subway entrances, and all are located within a 15-minute walk.

As a regular subway commuter, marathon runner and mother of two kids under three, I am out on foot more than once most days of the week, and often with a baby stroller. It is clear by the number of people passing my home on a regular basis that I have many like-minded neighbours. This will only increase with the completion of the new community centre.

The proposed sidewalks would greatly improve what are currently the least walkable streets in the neighbourhood. It is a matter of safety. Presently, snow banks, or large puddles that occupy the sides of these streets, force pedestrians to walk well within a lane shared by car traffic. The car traffic would benefit as well from having fewer pedestrians in their lanes.

Until Jan. 22, the city is polling area residents about their support for this sidewalk. When responding, please consider the following:

This sidewalk does not affect only the homeowners whose lawn it would cross. It affects many of your neighbours of all ages, including elderly exercisers, new parents and nannies with strollers, dog walkers and transit commuters. Supporting the sidewalk supports the neighborhood's walkability and drivability.

Talk to your neighbours and tell them you support the sidewalk.
