People build subways in hope more people will ride it, reader writes

To the editor:

Councillor Joe Mihevic was wasting his money. The city is a "creature of the province" and if the provincial government wants to deal with the mayor to the exclusion of council, it is unassailable.

Worrying about the capital cost is really also a waste of time. The real concern should be that the new lines, whether LRT or subways or a mixture of both, will require subsidies far into the future that will dwarf those now needed to support the existing system.

There is not enough density along any of the routes to support anything more than a bus. People building these lines are really building them in the hope that other people will ride them.

A thorough examination of the existing Sheppard line will give some idea of the subsidy required. Building more capacity to deliver more people to the overcrowded Yonge line makes no sense.
