EDITORIAL: Appreciate family and friends over the holidays

Look no further than the light traffic on the TTC, Don Valley Parkway or Hwy. 401.

There is something going on.

Many people have apparently booked time off from work during these festive days.

Time off from work generally means time on for life. Take advantage of this special season.

There are two key components of a typical complaint. Many of us need either more time or more money or both.

We encourage you to put any time off during this season to good use.

Reduce your stress. Reach out to new people. Build your family life.

Spend some time on the details of life that have been ignored. You know - those little items that float around in the back of your head that you think you'll get to someday "if I only had time."

There's that bill that needs to be paid. There's that card that needs to be sent. There's that appointment you needed to make but hasn't made it high enough on your mental priority list. Knock some of these off your list and gain the peace of mind from a less complicated life.

Do you know your neighbours? Do you really know them? Make it a point to introduce yourself to someone you have yet to meet. Life is teeming with experiences just waiting to happen. Enrich your life with new people, cultures and outlooks. They can help provide you with a more well-rounded outlook on your own beliefs, your community and your neighbourhood.

And then there's family. Do you have family who has been estranged? Has it just been too busy for you to keep in touch with your closest of relatives? Take the time and make that connection during this holiday period.

It may not mean much to you; it may mean everything to the person on the other end of the telephone or visit. Take time to be with your children. Take time to teach your children all the good things you were taught when you were young, that have escaped your memory until now. Recommit to a family life.

So whenever you return to work, we'd like you to promise no complaining about "Where did my vacation time go."

Use your time wisely. Feel enriched. Be fulfilled. Learn more about life, friends and family. Take the time to appreciate life's many wonders. Appreciate how fortunate we are to live in this city, this country and enjoy the rights and freedoms we too often take for granted.

May you spend this holiday season in appreciation of the good that surrounds us all. May you live in the joy of your beliefs and move forward refreshed and happy.
