COOK ON CARLAW: Toronto, I smell an Election

Are we a big city or what?

The people at Niagara tourism decided they wanted people from Toronto to come down and visit the falls and see a bunch of people gambling. They also mentioned they had great parks, which they do because I lived there years ago.

Anyway the Niagara tourism group wrote four TV ads and eight online videos telling Torontonians that instead of running for a streetcar or sitting in traffic to head their way and run after a Frisbee in one of their parks. They also mentioned a few other things about city life that was all true. The tag line for all the commercials was "Shake off the City."

Pretty innocuous if you ask me, but according to the people at City Hall it was devastating, horrible, simply awful. How could someone say something bad about Toronto especially during an election year?

The local politico's believe Toronto should never be thought of as a big city. Now, of course, when we're hosting the G20 we're a big city which deals with rioters and protestors. But we're not a big city when someone points out you spend your time running to catch a street car or sitting in traffic for hours.

Now the Niagara area doesn't have "big city problems" so they point them out and tell us to come down and visit them for the weekend or the week. Keep in mind, they're not inviting us to stay a lifetime because if we did stay they'd become a big city like Toronto and that's not what they want.

That has offended local politicians. If Toronto really is as Niagara suggests, then they're not doing their job, which isn't good if you're trying to get re-elected in October. And that brings me to some of the other insane things you're going to hear from the people trying to get elected this October.

1. If I get elected I'm going to spend more money on more police officers because when you have lots of police officers there isn't any crime. Yes I think the G20 is a good example of what an increased police presence can accomplish.

2. I'm going to spend more money on buses because if you have more busses there won't be as many cars on the road, which means there will be more bus traffic, which isn't like real traffic.

By the way vote for the person who seems to know Toronto is bigger than St. Catharines but smaller than New York. It's not great, but it's a start.
