Anything plaid is massive this season, from shirts, skirts, jackets and hoodies, it's everywhere.
| A returning trend is the argyle pattern on T-shirts, golf shirts either as a small detail on the sleeve or a bolder pattern, and red and black is a huge colour combination this year.
| Julie Hanning, of Scarborough Town Centre, said another look that is big this season, is the 80s look. The 80s look means clothes will have lots of patterns and graphics, lending easily to mixing and matching and tailoring to a range of personal styles.
| "For example, for a boy, you would either take a jean or a khaki cargo pant, which is a great basic, but then you would pair it with a bold-coloured shirt and it could have graphics on it," she said.
| Returning from the past few seasons are the legging, which Hanning said are great for layering with a skirt, shorts, or a long knit sweater dress.
| However, Hanning said she does have one caution about the popular item.
| "Leggings are not a pant, they are meant to be worn co-ordinated with a shorter skirt, a long top or a short dress," she said. "So many times I see girls and women wearing leggings as pants, if you want the skinny leg look wear a pair of skinny jeans."
| The uniform is another big look, for example, a white blouse and skirt with bow-adorned patent shoes and a headband. And for the older girl, a boyfriend-style baggy jean with a T-shirt paired with a crest emblazoned blazer will achieve that look.
| Once kids have the basic items that parents want them to have like jeans, T-shirts and sweaters, Hanning said it's easy for kids to personalize their look by adding some trendier pieces. This way, both parents and children are happy and ready for school.
