Don't take away TTC's right to strike

Toronto Council would be wise to reject emotional calls to make the TTC an essential service, thereby eliminating the right of its workers to strike.

I do not believe that a modern, progressive society should be removing fundamental rights of its citizens. If such an action were to be taken with the TTC, we risk opening the door to removing rights from a range of important, but not necessarily essential, workers. There is broad consensus on the need for a revitalized and affordable public transit system in Toronto.

Clearly, better funding from other levels of government is part of the solution. But city politicians should also be engaging citizens in a thoughtful discussion on the future of the TTC.
