Knitters help shivering kids

Enthusiastic knitters of all levels are invited to use their talent to keep needy kids warm and prevent them from contracting respiratory illnesses.

The special "pneumonia vests" are sent to children living in hot countries where the temperature drops at night.

Knitting for Shivering Children meets at Beach United Church, 140 Wineva Ave., in the Spirit Space. The first gathering of the winter season is set for Saturday, Jan. 15 at 10:30 a.m. The group meets the second Saturday of the month: Feb. 12, March 12 and April 9.

On Saturday, May 7, Knitting for Shivering Children will decorate the church's sanctuary with the "fruit of its needles" in time for Mother's Day Sunday, May 8.

Last year, Knitting for Shivering Children donated 375 vests to Canadian Food for Children, a non-profit organization that distributed them overseas.

The group also knits hats, scarves, socks and mittens for The StreetKnit Project (www.streetknit.ca), which donates warm clothing to homeless people in Toronto.

Those not so inclined to knit, can help out by donating yarn.
