Singers can get in tune at St. John's singalong

Always wanted to sing but were afraid to belt out a tune? Now, you can join a singalong group Tuesdays at St. John's Presbyterian Church.

"It is for everyone who enjoys being with other people and would love getting together to sing," says Grant Jaahnke from Canada Sings.

Canada Sings arranges neighbourhood singalongs throughout Canada for anyone who wants to join, especially for those who think they can't sing.

Jaahnke said the singalongs are for "people who always wanted to but were terrified and never would sing in a choir."

Participants don't require singing experience to join. Jaahnke added that experienced singers are also welcome.

"There will be a variety of songs from all around the world," he said.

The group is open to suggestions, too, "Whatever people want to sing. Half of it will be 'you pick' and if it isn't in the book then maybe the person picking it can teach us and we will sing it."

Jaahnke said while he was handing out flyers on the street, people would stop by to sing. "One guy even came up saying: 'Hey, I have a song' and we all sang with him.'"

Free-of-charge singalongs take place every second Tuesday of each month at various venues in Riverdale, starting Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7 to 8 pm. at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 415 Broadview Ave.

Volunteers are needed.
