Free concert supports Tamil-Canadian cancer campaign

More than 50 distinguished Tamil-Canadian musicians are putting their talents together to fight cancer through a concert this weekend in Scarborough.

The concert will showcase Tamil melodies from Tamil cinema and takes place this Sunday, Sept. 5, at Metropolian Centre, 3840 Finch Ave. beginning at 6 p.m.

The event is part of a year-long campaign to raise awareness about cancer in the Tamil-Canadian community.

Bharadhi Arts musical school is organizing the concert. Last year the school suffered the loss of its founder, Bavadharani Mathivasan, who died from cancer. She was a leading music teacher in the Tamil-Canadian community, and the performances of old and new Tamil songs will centre around the theme of loss.

Danton Thurairajah of the Canadian Tamil Congress expects a full house on Sunday.

"It is a free concert, but we will be urging people to donate during the concert," he said.

All proceeds from the concert, as well as the entire campaign, will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.
