E. coli warning in beef products sold at Kabul Farms

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume raw beef products from a North York grocery store as they may be contaminated with E. coli.

All cuts of raw beef, including but not limited to tenderloin, beef chunks and ground beef, sold Aug. 6 from Kabul Farms on Beverley Hills Drive, are affected by the warning.

The products were wrapped at the Hwy. 401 and Jane Street store for sale on demand and may not bear a label indicating packing date, lot code or a best before date. The contaminated food may not look or smell spoiled.

The CFIA is aware of an E. coli 0157:H7 illness outbreak in Ontario and is in talks with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs and Health Canada to investigate these illnesses.

Consumption of food contaminated with the bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. It may cause seizures, strokes and the need for blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. In severe cases, death may occur.

For information, call CFIA at 1-800-442-2342.
