Police to increase presence in Lawrence Heights following shooting

Police are increasing their presence in Lawrence Heights following a drive-by shooting Wednesday that injured a 40-year-old woman.

Police said a passenger of a green sedan opened fire at Varna Drive and Cather Crescent at 3:18 p.m. "One of the rounds seemed to deflect off an object and hit a woman," said Det. Sgt. Jim Sproxton, adding the victim was "a totally innocent bystander who was just sitting on a porch."

The woman, hit in the collar-bone, was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment. She has since been released from hospital.

Numerous shell casings were found at the scene. "We're reviewing video and interviewing witnesses to determine the vehicle and try to identify the persons responsible," Sproxton said. "Such a random act with absolutely no concern for the safety of innocent people who are in that community. It's very concerning."

Police speculate the incident could be connected to the Aug. 24 shooting on Cather that took the life of 24-year-old Randy Anthony Malcolm and injured a 36-year-old man.

A man who didn't give his name said residents are scared. "What about the children? What is their feeling when they hear shots here?"

Anyone with information is asked to call 32 Division at 416-808-3200.
