The evolving history of Toronto's Don Valley urban landscape will be shown through artwork by the Don Valley Art Club (DVAC) during an exhibit downtown opening Sept. 18.
The 50 pieces of original artwork by more than 35 DVAC artists will be presented alongside historical art works and photographs."It's a totally different type of show," said Susan L. Brown, DVAC curator and artist. "It's the first time we've had a curated exhibit."Presented by the City of Toronto through its Market Gallery program downtown, the Brickworks/Artworks exhibition will run until Feb. 26, 2011.Historical art from the City's collection will show 19th century views and other documentation highlighting the changing Don Valley landscape. The exhibit will also document the existing Brick Works site, the current home of the DVAC artists' group.DVAC, which has members in North York, East York and central Toronto, originated in East York more than 60 years ago, Brown said. "Our work has always related to the Don River and Don Valley," she said. "The show will also celebrate the heritage of a community art group that has existed for more than 60 years. Usually the attention is on young artists in the city just breaking ground but I would say our group is more senior and that should be celebrated as well."The Market Gallery is located on the second floor of South St. Lawrence Market, 95 Front St. Admission is free.Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Sunday, Monday and holidays.
