New temporary office for Greenest City staff

A call out to the community for a temporary home for Greenest City went unanswered, so for the time being its staff have move north out of Parkdale.

The staff of Greenest City has taken up temporary residence at the office of FoodShare, a non-profit community organization at 90 Croatia St. at Brock Avenue and Bloor Street West.

"We weren't able to find anything closer in the neighbourhood that we could have five days a week," said Carolyn Scotchmer, executive director of Greenest City. "So in the end this is what made sense."

Greenest City, an award-winning charitable organization that grows local organic food, offers food-related programming and operates the HOPE Garden, is normally housed in an office in the basement of Masaryk-Cowan Community Centre.

Each year the community centre closes for routine maintenance and the five employees of Greenest City need to find a new home.

FoodShare operates out of an old school and have quite a bit of space with which they operate a Good Food Box program, lunch program as well as gardens and a greenhouse, Scotchmer said.

The space is being lent to Greenest City free of charge and despite the distance from the regular office, Scotchmer said programming will run as usual.

"Because so many of the staff live in Parkdale, they just go from home to the programs," she said. "It makes it a bit harder for the gardeners to find us, they like to wander in the office and ask questions and visit with us, but we have invited them all to come visit us up here as well."

Greenest City will be back in Parkdale Sept. 27.
