Queen Street East blaze caused by candle

A candle was to blame for a fire in an apartment bedroom in the Beach Thursday, July 29.

Fire crews were called to 1874 Queen St. E. at 10:23 p.m.

"The fire was knocked down by 10:34," Capt. Mike Strapko said. "The fire was contained to a bedroom."

There were no injuries. Damage is estimated at $8,000.

"Cause was an unattended candle," Strapko said. "The safety message would be: do not leave candles unattended and have them in a safe holder. Just like cooking, you never leave cooking unattended."

Seven fire trucks and 30 firefighters were at the scene of the single-alarm blaze.

"We cleared the scene at 11:34 (p.m.)," Strapko said.
