A motorist suffered serious injuries after he rear-ended a truck that had slowed for an earlier collision on Highway 401 near Port Union Road Wednesday, July 28.
The first crash occurred at 12:05 p.m. when an eastbound vehicle went out of control and rolled over just east of the Port Union bridge. The driver, a 43-year-old woman, was assisted out of the vehicle by passersby. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to Rouge Valley Health System's Centenary site."The investigating officer is of the firm belief that her injuries were really mitigated by the use of a seat-belt," OPP Const. Graham Williamson said. "So it's a good news story: wear your seat-belt and you could survive a rollover on the 401."A dumpster truck that slowed for traffic caused by the rollover was rear-ended by a pickup truck in the eastbound collector lanes at 12:23 p.m. The pickup sustained major damage and caught fire. The collision also caused a diesel fuel spill."Also at that time there was quite a heavy downpour," Williamson said. The 20-year-old male driver of the pickup was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The eastbound collector lanes were closed until 1:38 p.m. for the investigation and clean-up.
