Cellphone chat leads police on car and foot chase

A man faces charges following a police chase in North York on Monday, July 26.

Police allege an officer spotted a motorist talking on his cellphone on Hwy. 401 near Dufferin Street and tried to pull him over around 12:55 p.m. The suspect vehicle sped off, got off the highway at Dufferin and ran a red light, nearly hitting a pedestrian. Police chased the suspect vehicle into a nearby housing complex where the driver fled on foot. During a foot chase, a Honda Accord picked up the suspect. A motorist stopped to assist the officer and allowed him into his vehicle to follow the Accord. The Accord went into another housing complex where its two occupants fled on foot.

Police were told the pair entered a home in the area. The home was contained, and a man was arrested.

Nicholas Wong, 24, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, obstructing police, driving while under suspension, driving with no validated permit, driving while using a hand held electronic device and failing to stop for police.

Police are still looking for another man.

Anyone with information is asked to call OPP Const. Mulville at 416-985-4981.
