Toronto Police Service announced Tuesday, June 29 it's setting up a special team to study, review and report on all aspects of policing in during the G20 Summit in Toronto.
The team, called the Summit Management After Action Review Team (SMAART), will specifically look at G20 police methods and best practices. The purpose of SMAART is to provide an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses in the G20 plans and their execution, and to provide a model for improved best practices in future operations."Considering the challenges of the G20 Summit, the Toronto Police Service and our policing partners with the RCMP, the OPP, the Canadian Forces and Peel Regional Police, worked together seamlessly. The effort, professionalism and restraint displayed by Summit police officers was outstanding," said Chief Bill Blair, in a release."We feel it's extremely important, with an event of this unprecedented size and complexity, to ensure that we examine everything we did and how we did it. This will ensure that our procedures are tested thoroughly, and that we identify any areas that may require further examination."Blair also said he has no doubt the SMAART report would also benefit other law enforcement agencies in Canada and abroad.
