Weston-Mount Dennis For Youth Initiative headquarters re-opens

After extensive renovations, the Weston-Mount Dennis headquarters of the For Youth Initiative (FYI) will re-open Friday, April 30.

Mayor David Miller and representatives from the For Youth Initiative and its funding partner, the Youth Challenge Fund, will be present at 5 p.m. to officially open the community hub located at 1652 Keele St.

The new facility is a youth-focused community space that was designed, planned and constructed by youth. It features a computer room, lounge, dance space, kitchen, boardroom and offices.

Since their formation in 2000, the FYI has expanded from two staff members and a $400,000 budget to more than 20 staff members and a $3 million budget.

The renovated building will allow the organization to continue to offer programs for life skills, arts, recreation, after-school programs and female specific courses.

During the opening ceremony, the mayor will also be presenting scholarships to five young people who have shown leadership in the community and are pursuing post-secondary education.
