Toronto police are advising people to be extra cautious when hiring movers.
In recent weeks, police have received several complaints about some moving companies defrauding customers.
Investigators report the unscrupulous movers provide very low cost quotes and get clients to sign a contract on the day of the move. Since it is such a busy time, customers typically do not properly read the agreement.
The moving company then asks for a deposit prior to the work being completed.
Halfway through the job, the cost of the job is suddenly increased.
If the client refuses to pay, the moving company threatens to hold their belongings in storage or even unload them onto the street until they pay the amount in full.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-5500, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
Police also offered tips on how to avoid being victimized by a dishonest movers:
-Contact the Better Business Bureau and the Consumer Protection Branch to see if there is a complaint history before hiring a moving company.
-Choose a moving company that has been used by friends or family members or ask the company for verifiable references.
- Limit the amount of any deposit you provide to a moving company.
- Beware of "too-good-to-be-true" rates.
- Obtain a copy of the contract prior to the date of the move and carefully review it.
- When presented with a contract, don't sign anything you disagree with or don't understand.
- Always remember you have the right to refuse the services of any moving company.
