Police have arrested a second man in connection with the theft of jewelry from a dying woman at Toronto East General Hospital.

Police allege two men entered the hospital at 825 Coxwell Ave. and began going from floor to floor around 8 p.m. March 16. The men then entered the room of an elderly unconscious woman in the palliative care unit and allegedly stole her jewelry.

The woman died when police arrived.

Rocky Prosser, the hospital's protection services manager, said thefts happen from time to time though this type of theft is very rare.

"How low would people go to do this to someone's family and to someone who is dying?" he said. "A theft of a chocolate bar or items out of a store here is vastly different than going into a patient's room who's dying and steeling from them."

There are 235 cameras throughout the hospital.

"If we need to, we can track an individual's movement from the time they enter the building until the time they leave," Prosser said.

On March 17, police released surveillance camera images of the suspects and described them as white and 20 and 30 years old. One had short dark brown hair and wore blue jeans, a black leather jacket, a black and white striped shirt and white running shoes. The other had a shaved head and wore a fedora-style hat and a dark jacket.

Isaac Lewkowicz, 29, was arrested less than six hours after the release of the images. He has been charged with theft under $5,000, theft over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possessing heroin, possessing marijuana and four counts of failing to comply with probation.

York Regional Police arrested 26-year-old Marcos Marinoni on Saturday.

"He was taken to court (Sunday) and then requested medical treatment so he was taken to hospital," Toronto Police Const. Wendy Drummond said. "I don't know what the complaint was."

Marinoni has been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, theft of credit card, possessing property obtained by crime under $5,000, possessing a credit card obtained by crime, theft over $5,000, two counts of theft under $5,000 and three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card obtained by crime.
