Sonnet Show seeks talent

The Humber River Shakespeare Company is currently looking for actors, writers, directors and volunteers to contribute their time and talent towards its third annual fundraising Sonnet Show: A Night of 14 - 14 Lines, 14 Days, 14 Minutes.

Etobicoke's Montgomery's Inn will play host to five new Canadian short plays, each one written, produced, and rehearsed exclusively for this event, and inspired by one of Shakespeare's Sonnets.

Five writers will be asked to arrive at the Inn 14 days before the Friday, May 28 event, at which point they will be given a writers kit that will give them the "rules" for their new script. The kit will contain the sonnet whose themes and images that will inspire the play, the number of characters to be in the play, and the room assignment in the Inn where the play is to take place. The writers will then have an opportunity to see the rooms in which their plays will be set, and what historical props may also be used.

The writers will then have 14 days to transform their 14 line sonnet into a 14 minute play. At the end of that time, the writers will be asked to submit their scripts to hand out to the participating performers and directors, who will arrive at the Inn at 9 a.m. on May 28.

Over the course of the day they will rehearse, memorize and edit the pieces until 6 p.m. Guests will start to arrive soon thereafter for the performances. Each piece is then performed 5 times with audience members going from room to room promenade-style.

Anyone interested in participating is asked to email Artistic Director, Kevin Hammond at kevin@humberrivershakespeare.ca and indicate a preferred role (actor, writer, director or volunteer).
