Agnes Macphail Award to be presented next week

An exemplary East Yorker will be honoured at the Agnes Macphail Award ceremony next week.

The ceremony takes place Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. in the True Davidson Council Chambers of the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave., at Mortimer Avenue.

This is the 18th year the award has been given out to a citizen who exemplifies the social justice focus of Macphail's life and her creed to "think globally, act locally." Macphail was the first woman MP elected in Canada in 1921.

The evening will begin with a performance by the East York Choir and then Grade 8 student Saniya Hussain will recite her winning speech about poverty in Haiti.

Rosemary Speirs, the founder of Equal Voice, is to give a speech honouring Macphail and her legacy to Canada. Equal Voice is a non-partisan organization dedicated to increasing the presence of women in all levels of politics in Canada.
