Kenk released from jail

Notorious bike thief Igor Kenk has been released from the Don Jail after serving a two-and-a-half year sentence.

Last December, the former Queen West bike shop owner was sentenced to 30 months of jail time after pleading guilty to being in possession of 10 stolen bicycles worth less than $5,000. Kenk also pled guilty to six drug-related charges.

He was only required to serve four months due to credit for time served prior to his trial.

Kenk initially faced 58 charges after police dismantled his alleged bike-theft and drug-distribution ring in the summer of 2008. He was arrested on July 16, 2008 after police caught him allegedly instructing a man to steal a bicycle across the street from his downtown bike shop.

The remaining 48 charges against him were subsequently dropped as well as those against his common-law wife, Jeanie Chung.

Kenk is believed to be behind the theft of up to 3,000 bicycles seized from his former commercial property at 927 Queen St. W. and at several rented storage spaces in the downtown core in the summer of 2008.

Police also recovered about eight kilograms of marijuana and more than two ounces of cocaine at Kenk's Yorkville-area home and place of business during their search warrants.

In the months following the recovery, police helped reunite nearly 600 people with their stolen bicycles.

Kent had been in custody at the Don Jail since December 2008 after breaching the conditions of his bail.
