Police release video to help identify arsonist

Police have released surveillance video in the hopes of identifying an arsonist.

The fire broke out at the Las Brisas Del Mar nightclub on Rivalda Road near Weston Road and Sheppard Avenue at 4:38 a.m. Monday.

Police don't know why someone would want to burn down the establishment. "We are looking at a number of different angles," said Const. Drew Haworth of 31 Division. "We're hoping for the public's assistance in identifying the suspect."

Damage is estimated to be between $50,000 and $100,000. "The front of the building was heavily damaged," Haworth said.

Surveillance video shows a dark SUV or minivan arriving at the club a few minutes after the last person leaves. A man wearing a hoodie and carrying a can gets out of the vehicle and pours liquid across the front of the building. He goes back to the vehicle but comes outside moments later to ignite the accelerant.

"Then he runs away. Obviously he misjudged where he was lighting it," said Haworth. "It just caught him by surprise."

Police don't know whether the suspect was injured in the blaze.

Anyone with information is asked to call 31 Division at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
