Pedestrians pinned under truck

Seniors fighting for lives in hospital

Two elderly pedestrians are fighting for their lives in hospital after being hit by a truck near Yonge and Maitland streets Monday, March 8.

The incident happened around 1:40 p.m. when the 49-year-old driver of a Ford cube van struck two people as he was turning left to travel southbound on Yonge Street from Maitland Street.

The victims, both 77, were pinned beneath the truck.

Kim McKinnon, a spokesperson for the City of Toronto's Emergency Medical Services said emergency crews treated the victims at the scene before they were rushed to the trauma unit at St. Mike's hospital.

Both victims sustained traumatic life-threatening injuries as a result of the accident, she said.

A portion of Yonge Street near the accident scene was closed to vehicular traffic for several hours Monday as officers from Toronto police traffic services investigated the accident.
