Two pedestrians struck downtown

Seniors sustain serious injuries

A man and a woman aged 65-plus have been rushed to St. Mike's Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries this afternoon after being hit by a truck near Yonge and Maitland streets.

The incident happened just before 2 p.m.

Kim McKinnon, a spokesperson for the City of Toronto's Emergency Medical Services, confirmed the victims were pinned underneath the vehicle that struck them. She said emergency crews treated the victims at the scene before they were transported to hospital for further care.

Both victims sustained serious traumatic injuries as a result of the accident, McKinnon said.

A portion of Yonge Street near the accident scene has been closed to vehicular traffic. Motorists should avoid the area as it will likely be off-limits for several hours.

Officers from Toronto Police Traffic Services are currently at the scene probing the accident.

Anyone with information should contact police at 416-808-1900, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
