A 12-year-old girl has succumbed to her injuries at the Hospital for Sick Children following a tragic house fire Sunday afternoon that took the life of her father.

The father, 35-year-old Ken Einboden, died after saving his baby daughter, Kendra, and then rushing back into the home on Kemp Square in the area of Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue to save his older daughter, Britney.

The fire broke out about 2:45 p.m. Sunday in the kitchen and spread quickly.

Witnesses said Einboden came rushing out of the house carrying Kendra and screaming there was a fire before running back in to save Britney in her upstairs bedroom.

Neighbour Eugenio Branzanti called 911 after hearing screams and seeing black smoke billowing from the home.

"My friend ran to the front door and tried to go in but he couldn't see anything because of the smoke," he said. "He then yelled for Ken to get out, but (there was) no response."

Einboden was pronounced dead at the scene, while Britney was taken first to Humber River Regional Hospital and then transferred to Sick Kids where she died this morning.

The girls' mother, Jackie, was not home at the time.

The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.
